Fashion Show Review #1

On the evening of Sunday, March 11, 2007, I attended a fashion show that was presented by Southeast Boy Productions. The name of the show was called Masterpiece Theatre which was located at the Best Western in Washington, D.C. Their were two featured designers by the name of Arvielle Designs and Contagious Crocheted Designs. The show was hosted by DC’s April Watts of Majic 102.3 FM, who by the way was designed in an original Contagious Crocheted Design with some fitted jeans, silver heals, her hair and make up were well put together.
The ambiance of the venue was your typical display of a standardized decorative hotel. I approached the table where the tickets were being taken and upon entering the area where the fashion show was taken place was a very close quarter room with a standard size runway. I wasn’t sure what to expect once I sat down and waited for the show to start. Well, needless to say the show was scheduled to began at 7pm which of course did not happen. The producer of the show announced 10 minutes before they started that it was going to start late because of daylight savings time. So, the show did not start until 8:00 pm which the audience was not pleased, mostly everyone had been waiting for over an hour.
As mentioned before Ms. April Watts was the host of the fashion show. She was doing her best to get the crowd excited and pumped for the show but of course it took a minute to get everyone in that state of mind because of the long wait. So once the crowd got amped to see the designers and models the show began with it’s first designer which was Contagious Crocheted Designs by Annette Williams. The introduction was a model who was dancing off of Goapele’s song “Closer”.
The model did a wonderful job showing her talents as a dancer and model. She wore a black crochet outfit that really fit the shape of her body. Once the intro was over then the other female models were showcased with the designs. They wore swimsuits, dresses, hats and displayed purses all made of crochet. After the female models came the male models which displayed hats that were made of crochet along with a few swimming gear, which was really hot.
It was good to see male models wear something other than urban gear. The only thing that I would have done was have the male models come out first and then the females because they had a more variety of garments to display. When it was time for the end of the showcase the models all had on hats instead of the wonderful garments that were displayed earlier. Also, the designer when she came out didn’t have on her own design which I thought was odd, maybe it was just me. It was a well put together presentation I have to say that the models and the designer was the best part of the show.
After Contagious Crocheted Designs, up next was Arvielle Designs who were suppose to be introducing four acts for the show which would have made since why it was called Masterpiece Theatre. The designers consisted of three people who were V. Thomas, L. Maddox and R. Williams. The designer team in my opinion was not ready to be apart of a fashion show. Their presentation was not good at all, they had the models wear their own clothing but they were announcing that they were the designers of the garments. It was not very professional or appealing at all. The first act was called Ecstasy, some of the presentation for the swimwear was not appealing on the male models at all. The models looked good but the garments on them didn’t capture the illusion for what the name of the scene was called.
The second act was called Urban Rockstar, this scene should have been called the Casual Corner or Enter the Gap because I didn’t see or feel anything rockstar about this scene. The urban part of it wasn’t even presented to the audience it look like the models went in their closets and picked out an everyday casual outfit. This was clearly not the scene where the designers supplied the clothing. After this act was the intermission, CR Da Show from Baltimore was the entertainment and there were some terrible technical difficulties. I have to give the brother some positive recognition because he still went on to do his segment without a mic for approximately four minutes before they fixed the problem. Even though, the audience was leaving, CR was doing his best to get the audience involved by taking off his shoes and jacket, getting the audience to clap along with him and everything.
After intermission, there was the third act which was called Espana Cani. This scene was relating to a bull and an El Matador. It gave that whole Spanish feel which was rather creative but the presentation was not well rehearsed. The beginning started pretty well but by the middle and end of the scene it lost me completely. The garments again were not designed by Arvielle, they were all the models clothing.
There was suppose to be a fourth act to the show which would have been the finale called Hollywood but the producer (A. Anderson) came out and said that due to daylight savings time that the four act would not be seen. That was not the case at all of course I had my inside scoop of what really happened. Arvielle Designs were suppose to have gowns and suits for the Hollywood scene. They clearly weren’t prepared for the show at all, so the producer blamed it on the time. So, he not only started the show an hour late but cut the finale of the show. He didn’t offer some of the audience’s money back or anything it was just an unprofessional experience for everyone. I knew some of the models that were in the show so I did get to support them. Not all was lost!!!
