Music has been suffering lately from poor sales due to violations of
internet use and downloading music illegally. However, rock group Radiohead gave
listeners the opportunity to download their music from their official website
before its nationwide release along with an option to choose how much they
wanted to pay for a song. What a bright idea the Englishmen came
up with! If artists followed this trend, it could prevent them from losing less
money. Even though fans heard the music months before it hit stores, it still
landed the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot 200 Albums.
The highlight of this album is the band as a whole.
The group’s seventh studio album is tentatively entitled “In Rainbows,” which consists of heavy driven beats, bass and schizophrenic rhythms. The album starts off with the bombastic yet confusing “15 steps,” which repeatedly screams the line “How come I end up where I started?” A listener may assume that the focus is on a cat…maybe the world will never know. The acoustic and haunting sounds of “House of Cards” becomes one of the best tracks on the album and is extremely engaging when front man Thom Yorke croons with the guitar lick in the background. The dark “Jigsaw Falls into Place” goes into a much sophisticated place that is different from the first half of the album. Each drum is heard intensely on this song and it becomes beautiful to hear. The highlight of this album is the band as a whole. Even though there is one vocalist, every member’s talent is shown by the drums displayed in each track. The instrumentation of “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” becomes quiet and magical when Yorkes’ vocals compliment the piano and synth disappearing in fast motion.
What a bright idea the Englishmen came up with!
Overall, “In Rainbows” is a great album that die-hard Radiohead fans would love. The band may gain new listeners after this album. “Rainbows” is as colorful as a pack of “Skittles” but what it captures is the different moods that “real” human beings have.
