Bring Sexy Back to the D

Seldom Blues restaurant review

By: Lanie Dixon

If it is possible for a restaurant to "bring sexy back" to a city, Seldom Blues has done it for Detroit and then some. This elegant, yet comfortable restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Detroit in the Renaissance Center. The sultry ambience, fabulous fare and attentive staff combine to create a dining experience that I won’t soon forget.

"Our potato and ham soup was the highlight of the night. Due to this soup alone, I’ve decided I’m never giving up pork, ever."

The stylish décor features beautiful jewel toned shades of blue, peppered with accents of brushed metals, cherry wood and moss green. Sitting just along the shore of the Detroit River, Seldom Blues also offers a breathtaking view of the Windsor, Ontario skyline. An ample yet intimate stage plays host to local and national talent, including owning partner and jazz flautist, Alexander Zonjic.

My husband and I were warmly greeted and quickly seated even though we arrived a full forty-five minutes before our reservation time. Our server was quite knowledgeable of the selections on the extensive list and recommended a delightful Chateau de Leelanau Riesling Select Harvest. It was one of those wines so good that by the time you thought about it, you’d had four glasses and were beyond tipsy. Good thing I didn’t have to drive, but as a passenger I’m sure I’d see sexy through my rearview mirror in the distance makin’ its way to Detroit.

Several appetizers were simple, yet splendid in taste. The calamari had a perfect texture and light seasoning. The Colossal Shrimp Cocktail was just that. The shrimp could pass for small house pets. They were cool, fresh and came served with three different sauces; a traditional cocktail sauce, a green tomatillo puree and a mango salsa. I would have preferred that they not have been served in the sauce though. What if I hated one? I didn’t, but what if I did? My least favorite of the three appetizers I sampled was Chef Jerry's Signature Jumbo Lump Crab & Lobster Cake. It tasted like over-mayonaised tuna rolled in bread crumbs.

Our potato and ham soup was the highlight of the night. Due to this soup alone, I’ve decided I’m never giving up pork, ever. It was creamy and light but packed a flavorful punch.

I had the Chef’s duo for my entree which consisted of Frank's Lobster Pontchartrain, which is a lobster tail lightly dusted and baked, finished with a shrimp, jumbo lump crabmeat, mushroom and champagne butter. Part two was broiled lamb chops served over wasabi mashed potatoes. The Lobster Pontchartrain was incredible, but it could have been served hotter. The lamb chops had an earthy, nutty flavor and were grilled to sheer perfection. The wasabi mashed potatoes were arguably the best mashed potatoes I’ve tasted in my life.

So if you are ever so lucky to find yourself in The D, make it a point to treat yourself to this gem. Who knows…it may bring your sexy back.
