Definition of Unity
From Baltimore Designer Candace Cruise
By: Teronce Styyles
I thought it would be a good idea to talk to different designers on their definition of unity.
This particular meaning of unity comes from a Baltimore designer by the name of Candace Cruise. I asked Candace to tell me what unity means to her and this is what she wrote: “Harmony, Completeness and Oneness. These are things that come to mind when I hear the word ‘Unity.’”
“It is often a difficult endeavor to
create harmony between visions of the past and the ever-changing
“dernier cri” of here, now and tomorrow.”

I’m pretty sure of its meaning but I decided to see what good ‘ole Webster had to say about it. I was rather surprised when I read definition number 8 which said “absence of diversity.” I would certainly have to disagree with that since in my mind it takes many different pieces to complete a whole puzzle.
Perhaps this is more evident as a fashion designer. It is often a difficult endeavor to create harmony between visions of the past and the ever-changing “dernier cri” (the French term for “the latest thing; the newest fashion”) of here, now and tomorrow. Each time I start a new design I look for the most unlikely - or should I say diverse - fabrics and colors to create beauty, uniqueness and most of all…UNITY.
I can think of one’s quest for life’s
purpose as a quest for “unity” in life. In other words, a feeling of
totality with nothing wanted. I have spent a great deal of time
searching for my reason for being, as have many others before me and all
avenues have led back here…to fashion.
“Harmony, Completeness and Oneness. These are things that come to
mind when I hear the word “Unity.”
Fashion is my UNITY. What’s yours?
