CcepThe future is now. Not only because each second that ticks by brings us closer to the unknown, but because what we currently do and feel impacts the unknown. Every breath that God blesses us with takes us further along in life and, since no one knows when his/her life will end, it is pointless to procrastinate (says the woman with three unfinished novels and a ton of ideas.)

When I first moved to California, I stood in my living room and said, “I want to write full-time!” Be careful what you wish for. Four months later, my first articles appeared in eXcape the matriX magazine and not even a year later I have become West Coast Editor and Youth Director of “The Future” section (Oh, how I love the way that sounds!) But, titles are not what’s important. It’s what they signify to me: growth towards my dream.

Writing for this publication has caused me to blossom in so many ways, from stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating conversations with the amazing people I interviewed for this issue to forcing myself to write about taboo topics in previous issues. And each time that I try these things, make these changes, and learn, I am moving One Step Closer to fulfilling my purpose.

I look around and see so many things and people with potential. I know great writers and artists who create for personal therapeutic reasons, sometimes not even realizing the affect that they have on others. The art that we create—the very life that we live—is a testament to others. It can be a stepping stone or an actual savior to those around us.

When I think of my future, I think of work, stress, and joy. My past and my present show me that there is nothing that I cannot overcome and my goal is to use my words and my voice to empower others. My future will be filled with love, laughs, and purpose because today I make choices to make it so. Our pasts have a way of bringing us down, but it is behind us for a reason. Choose not to turn and look back at mistakes except to learn from them.

So, think about it… What people around you are making a difference in this world? What music or films are going beyond the status quo and giving us an amazing show? What positive changes are you making to ensure that your future is a great one?

I believe everything we do brings us One Step Closer to fulfilling our purpose. What are you doing to bring yourself One Step Closer to yours?

One Step Closer,
Ccep J. Dew
