ETM 2010 Summer Reading List

Compiled by: Ccep J. Dew

ETM Writers suggest literature for you to read this summer:

The Human Food Factor by Howard R. Axtell
“I'm always interested in the deeper meaning of the bigger picture, and I value unique and well-researched perspectives. Author Howard Axtell is said to take his readers beyond just a ‘sternly’ opinionated view on the truth about America, but actually sheds insight on how the ‘shadowy’ entities of our government are operating behind the scenes. Our healthcare, taxes, and monetary systems are not what we think they are, and I look forward to seeing Axtell's point of view.”

The Color Purple by Alice Wright
“I totally enjoyed this book because it gave you a peek inside of the true persona of Celie and, with any book that is made into a movie, it highlighted key points that didn’t make it to the silver screen.”

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
“When I initially tried to read the text as a young adult, I was lost in the broken vernacular, but after picking it back up recently, I was totally enthralled in Hurston’s use of verbal imagery.”

Assata: An Autobiography by Assata Shakur
“Some biographies are dry and require will power and determination to reach the last page but this was an easy read although the subject matter wasn’t as easy to swallow.”

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
“Simply inspiring.”

In Search of Our Mother’s Gardens by Alice Walker
“I remember this book mainly because of a poem in it called ‘Be Nobody’s Darling’. That poem moved me to no end. To me, it’s incredible.”

The Mis-Education of the Negro by W.E.B. DuBois
“I have yet to finish this book, but I can see why it is an assigned reading for college students. It definitely gives one something to think about.”

Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke
“What more can I say besides, I believe every aspiring writer should read and own this book as a source of inspiration.”

Born to Use Mics by Michael Eric Dyson and Sohail Daulatzai
“The new book on my summer reading list is Born to Use Mics by Michael Eric Dyson and Sohail Daulatzai. This book brings writer and Hip-Hop artist together as they dissect Nas’1994 album Illmatic track by track.”
