Bliss Filled – The Shaun Mykals interview

Written By: Raven Ekundayo

My main reason for wanting to interview Shaun H. Mykals for the final issue of ETM is because this is his first interview with us. After years of covering events he's been a part of this is his first actual interview with The Misfits. Shaun is a remarkably gifted artist who has attended an internationally known university and performed with the likes of Patti Labelle and more. I'm happy that I could talk to my friend for our final issue. Check it out….

Raven - Give us the SHM back story. Tell the Misfits some things about Shaun's upbringing and how music became so important to you.

Shaun - I was born and raised in a place that would be considered a small town, Albany New York. I discovered the power of music and its influence through hearing some amazing singers at my local church. I remember going home and imitating them. They were superstars in my eyes.. This is where I developed a passion for singing. I haven't been able to shake it since.

Raven - I know that you attended college at Morgan State here in Baltimore. What was that eXperience like for you?

Shaun - Morgan State University was a priceless experience for me. It made me into the musician I am today. Dr. Nathan Carter who was the choir director was such a genius. He taught me things that I will never forget. There are really no words to express how invaluable my time at Morgan was. I have never been in the midst of so many AMAZINGLY talented people, NEVER!!!!!

Raven - What would you consider the highlight of your time at Morgan?

Shaun - One of my highlights from Morgan was a private moment I had with the Late Dr. Nathan Carter, he was composing a song and I was one of the first he allowed to hear what he had completed. It was such an honor for me. I will never forget it.

Raven - Being someone who was trained vocally, what are your views on the technical standpoints of singing as oppose to someone coming off the street and getting signed? Do you think a trained singer has better abilities or a better "handle" on their voice?

Shaun - I think people with training have the advantage of knowing the voice and how it works. But also we can have a tendency to over think singing and be overly critical. In all things I think balance is key; so training mixed with a rawness would be ideal.

Raven - You host an amdamaphus event called "Thursday Bliss". I've had the chance to attend several and it's a wonderful eXperience. Tell the readers a little bit about where the idea came from.

Shaun - Thursday Bliss came from me wanting to have a platform for people that I know that are amazingly talented. I originally didn't plan for it to be a recurring event. I just wanted the world to know about my friend Cynthia Renee who is a fantastic vocalist and pianist. It has truly taken on a life of its own and I am extremely grateful. I sit back as the biggest fan of everyone that comes to the mic. It is truly Blissful for me every show!!!!!

Raven - What does eXcaping the matriX mean to Shaun Mykals?

Shaun - Hmmm.. that means taking time to connect with what is real and true and leaving those "things" that are temporary and eventually will pass away. Its changing your perspective and knowing you are a spiritual being having a human eXperience.
