Prostate Cancer

Written by: luminoUS, Editor-in-Chief

Cancer is ever present in the world today and, although many are susceptible, some forms are specific to each of the sexes. While cervical cancer is relegated only to women, only men can be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer forms in the prostate, which is a part of the male reproductive system. More specifically, the prostate is located under the male bladder and in front of the rectum. Its primary function is to help make and store seminal fluid. Cancer of the prostate can cause erectile dysfunction, painful urination and trouble during intercourse. Just like any other form of cancer, the risk of metastasizing cells is a major concern.

Prostate cancer can go undetected for years because, many times, those diagnosed with the disease display no symptoms, which result in them ultimately dying from causes unrelated to the cancer itself. Although symptoms may be nearly non-eXistent, frequent urination, difficulty urinating or blood streamed urine can be red flags. It is a slow moving form of cancer and is prevalent in men over the age of 50. Once diagnosed, generally by way of a biopsy, treatment can vary depending on the patient and the stages of the disease. Chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery are the main methods used to rid the patient of cancerous cells.

Statistics show that prostate cancer is more prominent in Black men as opposed to any other race and this is due mostly in part because of diet. Prostate cancer is mostly found in men with high blood pressure. Due in part to the traditionally non-healthy food preparation methods of Black families, the overall health of Black males suffers. With diet factoring in heavily, men with increased folic intake are at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer and men who have increased amounts of vegetables, such as cauliflower and broccoli, in their diet have a reduced risk of developing the disease. A high alcohol intake in addition with genetic factors, such as men whose father or brothers have the disease, can also increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.

I know that most men do not like to have the yearly check-up with doctors, but I encourage them all to receive the adequate testing when the specified age has been reached. Whether or not symptoms are present, one should always operate on the basis of “be safe and not sorry”. With the medical technology of today, a cure is not far off, but, until then, the proper medical steps can be taken if necessary to decrease your chances of allowing the disease to spread throughout the body.

Much peace, love and light
