Food for Fashion

Written by: Kenneth- Michael

The fight to end hunger has taken center stage on the runway. The city of Keizer, Oregon is mixing fashion and food with their annual Food for Fashion event, benefiting aspiring designers and needy families. The event gives novice designers the opportunity to showcase their original designs. Proceeds from the event benefit the Keizer Community Food Bank. Keizer feeds impoverished families in Oregon.

Food for Fashion is an all-volunteer event, including the designers and the models used. Several options are in places for the designers involved, including a sales lobby. The sales lobby gives the designers the opportunity to sell their designs. Each designer has a booth at the event.  A featured designer catalog is also an option for the designer.

The fashion show has been a vessel for upcoming designers. Not only is the event a platform for the designer to showcase, but it is a competition. The winning design/designer is featured on a poster promoting next year’s event. The winner also is awarded the Keizer Iris Festival Fashion Icon (KIFFI) award.

Besides showcasing their designs, the designers are in charge of their entire set, which include the lightning, music, and video. This gives them the eXperience of, not only designing, but putting together a show.

Although the event is for new designers, businesses can participate by renting the runway to display their lines. The cost for renting the runway is $100 for businesses. The professional business showcase is separate from the actual show. The time slot allotted for businesses is during the judge’s deliberation and intermission.

The event is broadcasted on local television, so all the designers receive another medium of eXposure.

Recently, the event has been cancelled until further notice.
